Dancehall singer Jupitar claims the creative art space in Ghana supports only musicians who can sing in Twi.
The singer is of the view that many musicians are doing very well but are belittled because of their inability to sing in Twi.
He made this revelation while he was speaking on the “Uncut with D-Black” show, which was monitored by Hitzpulse.com
According to him, he knows many musicians in the North who can sing very well, but funnily enough, they will not even get up to 5 streams when they go to Accra.
Jupitar revealed that the radio and television stations in Ghana have chosen only a particular language (twi) that they promote, so if one doesn’t sing in that language, they don’t get promoted.
He cited an instance of Fancy Gadam, who could speak very well in his local dialect but had no option but to speak a different language in his “Total Cheat” song, which featured Sarkodie so that he could be promoted and heard.
“Most of our radio stations in our media space have chosen one particular language that they will promote. There is a very good rapper in the north who raps in Dagati or Sisala. But he can’t fluently speak Twi or pidgin…if you take that music to Accra. It won’t get up to two airplays,” he said.
Comparing Ghanaian music to Nigerian music, Jupitar said that Nigerian musicians will always become successful because they do not promote only one language, and no musician is belittled.
He cited an example that Nigerian musicians such as Asake, Phyno, and Focalistic all sing in their local dialects, however, they are not belittled in Nigerian showbiz.
“Take Nigeria for example, look at artists like Focalistic, Phyno, Asake. They all make songs in their native language. But yet they play these songs and they jam to it. So our creative space shouldn’t limit songs to one language,”
