Election 2024: Ursula Owusu-Ekuful responds to running mate speculation
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the minister of communications and digitization, has addressed rumors that she will be Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's running partner in the 2024 election for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West claimed to have spoken with Dr. Bawumia on multiple occasions, but none of them had to do with the vice presidential candidacy.
After the Vice President is chosen to lead the NPP on November 4, 2023, a number of candidates have surfaced to be his or her running companions.
Leading candidates have reportedly included Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (majority leader), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (education minister), and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (energy minister).
Other names circulating are John Ampontuah Kumah, Deputy Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Ashanti, and Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Deputy Minister of Education.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful and Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare are rumored to be contenders as well.
But when the MP was asked to clarify in an interview, she seemed shocked and said, "Saa" to wit really? in Twi.
"Dr. Bawumia and I have spoken on multiple occasions, but we have not discussed the running mate role.
We need to get to work. I would rather that we let him choose his own running companion.
Bawumia ought to take his time in search of the person he truly desires.
We have been discussing what we must do this year to support the people and our prospects as a party," she stated on UTV, which is based in Accra.
